Quail with Snow Shoes

The little stick feet might sink into the snow, but that’s not the end of the story. You use the wings.

The foreground trench is made by trudging. Not so the angel in the back.

It does the trick. Basically, the way to pull it off is to swim on the surface of the snow.

Using the wings.

Well, using everything you got, really.

You can just touch down lightly, or you can keep at it.

Flying uphill is entirely do-able. Just flap faster, whew.

Rhythm is key. Getting the tail to stop being a drag, now that’s hard.

I doubt the quail can keep this up for long, especially with hawks actively hunting, but for the moment the hawks are taking the sparrows and the quail are walking on their wings.

Well, running.
