I have worked here since 2011 telling stories of the Earth as preparation for a history of the Intermontane Grasslands of Central Cascadia and the rainswept coast that keeps them windy and dry. Now I am presenting this history, step by step, as I have learned it, often from the land itself. The history of this region includes the Canadian colonial space “The Okanagan Valley”, which lies over the land I live in above Canim Bay. The story stretches deep into the American West, into the US Civil War, the War of 1812, and the Louisiana Purchase, as well into the history of the Columbia District of the Hudson’s Bay Company. In all, the story spans the Chilcotin and Columbia volcanic plateaus and the basins that surround them. In this vast watershed lie homelands as old as 13,200 years (Sequim) and 16,200 years (Salmon River.) That’s how far we are walking together here, who are all the land speaking.
I’ve never seen a Magpie that way! Bravo!

It really IS a beautiful photo pf magpie! I have many magpies around my house. Chatty friends, having a nest in one of the bushes near my fence. But never had a possibility to take a photo like this 🙂

They stay so close and yet so far at the same time, don’t they! They have a nice laugh. This was sure a lucky shot!

Yes, exactly! They even manage to steel some shiny tiny things from our veranda. But I love them nonetheless. I spent the summer of 2015 reading about spirit animals, I even don’t know why. It was my first summer away from work and I started to notice all those birds and animals around my house, near the river and see. And I read also about magpie: “Only when we loudly follow our true calling in life by being all that we can be will we be able to find the fulfillment and satisfaction that we are longing for. Re evaluate your priorities before you move too much further down the path you are currently on.” I love tales, legends, myths and fairytales, and I do love these birds 🙂

This is gorgeous. Well caught, Harold! I am dancing with a Morris dance group called Edmonton Magpie Morris. I may use your photo to prove to them that our rag shirt kits (costumes) are the right design! I love magpies. I enjoy following Mr. Yegpie on Twitter, an Edmonton magpie with mad Twitter skills, but a pre-occupation with Cheetos.
