Black Widow on Guard

The watch spider at my front door has been killing bees and using the protein to lay eggs. Here is one sac she’s just finishing up.

200 eggs in there.

By the time I came back to figure out how to move the family, she had carried it away under the overhanging brickwork, and was hugging it with all eight legs and giving me the evil eye. Boy, can she ever stare. Now she has two sacs under there, and 5 layers of protective webwork just in case I don’t get the message. Yes, Ma’am, I do.

  1. “The” evil eye? I had to look it up. “Females are occasionally brownish black. Most black widow spiders are 3 to 10 mm long, with females being larger than males. Black widow spiders have eight legs and eight simple eyes, including two lateral pairs that almost touch.”

You may have those spiders. I don’t suffer from arachnophobia but . . .
