Ponderosa pines are not a species that likes to mingle with other tree species and communicate root to root. They prefer to stand out in the grass and wait for fire.
Still, they are not adverse to having friends. Siya?, or saskatoon, is their choice:
They often hang out together. The rest of the time Siya?, who likes to be alone, too, hangs out with rocks and grass.

Other than each other, both have the grass. That’s their true community. They are, in effect, grass of a very special kind.
