So, let’s say you want to eat wild rose petals, but don’t want to get eaten in turn and aren’t, say, as big as a mule deer and so, as far as rose petal eaters go, bad-ass? Well, you gotta hide, that’s the thing, but how, when the rose wants everyone passing by to have a look and a sniff? Do you want to be sniffed or inspected, even? No, you do not.
Here’s a clever solution. Just go as black as the hole you nibble out of that petal and everyone will pass by, thinking you are a hole yourself, when all you are is whole, and off they go to a petal of their own, those brute rose petal eaters and sniffers, because who wants to eat or sniff a gnawed-on rose petal, eh?
Well, you, yeah.

No hiding for these guys. Evening grosbeak and western tanager.
