Gardening Without Digging

You just need pots. Here are my father’s early potatoes. Because they like heat. Because he’s not 20 years old anymore. Because he has figured out that planting potatoes in compost allows him to move the compost into the garden, to pick the potatoes by turning them upside down, and to spread the compost at the same time. When you’re in your 80s, smart’s the thing.

P1250502You could plant these pretty much anywhere. His compost recipe? Shavings, manure and sand. Because that’s what he’s got. The potatoes are happy with it all. That’s my Dad: something new every day.

  1. What an excellent idea. Not quite doable on my balcony however, especially this summer when I’m now having to clear everything ready for “refurbishment”. Not too amused by having to empty all the containers and cart the earth down to bins in our garage from where, eventually, it will be spread in our outdoor gardens. Still, I expect it will be worth it when beginning-to-rust railings and beginning-to-crack concrete is all pristine! (Our building is 64 years old, so deserves attention from time to time.)

      • Ha! Fortunately they’re not big enough for that. Work on mine will begin June 2. Work will now go from 7am until 7pm. Too bad for those who like to sleep late. Pneumatic drills as the new alarm clocks?
