The Beauty of Ice

Okanagan Lake is a deep inland fjord …

…135 kilometres long…

…full of a molten glacier 12,000 years old.

The body of this glacier …

… is composed of myriads of molten comets …

Beavers are artists here.

… that plunged to the Earth from the edge of the Solar System …

… long ago. They are kept here by life …

… and the blue sky it has cast up around this iron planet.

On the luckiest and coldest of days…

… the lake speaks her deepest…

… oldest names …

… her glacial names …

… and her names of deep space …

… and catches the sun …

… and with it solar creatures such as our minds …

… and Earth creatures such as our bodies …

… and the bones within us.

These are the days when all people should come …

… and celebrate her return.

Summer is just a story we tell.

This is the story that tells us.

This is who we are.

This is when the deeps are present.

What music!

What coming apart and together. What life.

And yet these are the days when to walk at the lake is to walk alone.

How far this country has strayed.
